Mahaweli Scheme

Water is the most essential requirement of man which must not be wasted. Fortunately we are blessed with these resource which can be used  for the wholesomeness of the infertile areas of the country. Mahaweli the longest river that flows to the eternal sea with out being benefited was diverted wise fully so as to obtain multipurpose service.

As a solution for the three burning problems of the country, an immediately remedy was being soughted out, Of those, unemployment was the gravest. Importing of paddy, devastation of foreign exchange and the scarcity of hydroelectricity were the second and third respectively. As a result in 1977 immediate Mahaweli project was established.

At that time most of the skillful workers were draining to Middle East countries as there were no opportunities for them to be occupied. Therefore the construction of this gigantic buildings and implementation  of public facilities, many more skillful hands were employed, so this program catered for the most needful problem of unemployment in lager scale, which was not confined to a single area. Victoria, Kothmale and Maduruoya had been supplied with hundred thousands of job opportunities. Also nearly two hundred thousand of hectares had been fertilized and cultivated. Thus this gigantic scheme had solved the main burning of the island.

When the country is abundant with water there was no fear of scarcity of food. Automatically the staple food and other crops too had a great demand in the world market. Rate of importing of our food crops such as corn-flour and other cereals had gone down. Thus little by little Sri Lankan government could cut down most of  the unnecessary expenditure and save the foreign exchange.

The other target of Mahaweli scheme was to economize the hydroelectricity so as to improvise for rural areas. In comparison with other Asian countries Sri Lanka was the least consumer of power. Along with development of industrialization demand of power too raised instantly. Even then the irrigation process of Mahaweli project was powerful enough to generate a high voltage so as to illuminate one third of the island. Thus this grate program was well organized also north east regions. Still it quenches the thirst of thousand and one inferile fields. Today it supplies with homes for number of homeless peasants of the island.

Though the Mahaweli Scheme was financially aided by many foreign hands, the government at that time had taken the initiative to continue it with a great enthusiasm and dedication Really, we are lucky today being the consumers of this great asset.
