Water is the most essential requirement of man which must not be wasted. Fortunately we are blessed with these resource which can be used for the wholesomeness of the infertile areas of the country. Mahaweli the longest river that flows to the eternal sea with out being benefited was diverted wise fully so as to obtain multipurpose service. As a solution for the three burning problems of the country, an immediately remedy was being soughted out, Of those, unemployment was the gravest. Importing of paddy, devastation of foreign exchange and the scarcity of hydroelectricity were the second and third respectively. As a result in 1977 immediate Mahaweli project was established. At that time most of the skillful workers were draining to Middle East countries as there were no opportunities for them to be occupied.
